U&U&U, tissue paper and ink

I made this sculpture in 2010 shortly after the Gulf Oil Spill.  It was so upsetting watching the news accounts of this terrible mishap.  That same summer I was listening to a lot of women singer/songwriters after attending a fantastic Lilith Fair concert in Kansas City.  Although these two events seem not to have any correlation, the one similarity that came to me was the effect of overconsumption.  The oil spill was the result of our overconsumption of oil, and so many of the song’s subject matter dealt with the overconsumption of a relationship between people.  I represent the subject matter in this sculpture with fragile paper in a woman’ form that spirals and weaves; eventually, unraveling.
